How Are AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-D Art and Design, and AP Drawing Similar?
Those are AP Two-Dimensional Design (AP2D), AP Three-Dimensional Design (AP3D), and AP Drawing. All of these classes are typically year-long production classes revolving around a student-driven inquiry that is explored artistically. AP 2-D Art and Design deals with two-dimensional applications such as graphic design, photography, weaving, and collage. Contrary to AP Studio Art Drawing, focus is applied on the design itself instead of the composition of the artwork. AP Art and Design skill categories delineate overarching understandings central to the study and practice of art and design. Each of the three skill categories consists of skills that encompass foundational to advanced learning over the span of the course. Students need to develop, practice, and apply these skills in a variety of contexts. Part B of the Breadth section delves deeper into the investigation of visual ideas. In addition to submitting 12 digital images, students must provide written documentation accompanying each image. This documentation should articulate the thought process, inspiration, and conceptual development behind each piece.

AP 3-D Art and Design is a three-dimensional (3-D) art course that holds many similarities to the 2-D course. The course deals with 3-D artistic applications such as metalworking, sculpture, computer models, and ceramics. Like AP Studio Art 2D, the focus is on the design of the artwork itself as opposed to its composition. This is the deadline for AP Art and Design students to submit their portfolio components to the AP Program through the AP Digital Portfolio.
Develop 3-D skills in materials and processes, such as sculpture, architectural rendering and models, metal work, ceramics, glass work, and others. Skills 2 and 3 are specifically assessed in both portfolio sections (Sustained Investigation and Selected Works). Both sections of the AP Art and Design portfolio require students to submit writings about their work.
